As a healthcare assistant is as much as aboutabout negotiation as it is about patient care. Most, most of the timestime I have to negotiate with patients, with families, or with district nurses. I have learned to improve my own verbal communication by negotiating with others, especially when it comes to working in a care home where you can face
the
an angry person, and the natural impulse is to react instinctively. However, itthat often just escalates the conflictsconflict, so I have learned it is better not to make decisions on the spot when being attacked. I have also experienced differences in ideas, which leadscan lead to feelings of frustration and an unfriendly atmosphere at work. The important key factor about negotiations we needis to have skills, such as: Listening, questioning, accepting. It is always important to feel comfortable about questioning, as you wouldcould be discussing the current patients'patient's situation with the familiesfamily, and theso communication skills infor this part are vital. Negotiation is an everyday experience, sometimes I have to negotiate with my friends by listening to their problems, or even making a decision for myself. Most of the time when I am at work, I come across people who are rude, but I tend to take no offence as I know they are not as normaltypical as me, and also take theirtheir health should be taken into consideration.
