Empathy is at the root of our sense of compassion and harmony, which allows us to grow as human beings and be strong in unity. As social animals, since the dawn of humanity, living together ashas always been a question of survival. Strength in numbers. According to Darwin, joy and sadness, which originate from the prehistoric part of our brain (limbic brain), are key emotions that make us feel empathy and naturally help each other. So why do we see people, in our society, judge and discriminate against other human beings? In this article, I will not address the issue of psychopathy and other related mental problems that are at the root of some unfortunate behaviors in our society, but rather the more interesting issue, in my opinion, i.e. the other category of people who lack empathy towards human beings who are different. To my chagrin, I have known such people within my circle of friends and family, and I could hardly reconcile their thoughts and words with whom I knew they were. Genuinely; genuinely good people. However, I came to understand, after some research, that either tribe mentality, ignorance, or fear was at the root of their attitude towards difference. How does this relate to the subject of empathy? Before I answer that question, I suggest that we understand empathy a little better and even look at the history of the word itself.
