Brian,
You make an excellent point that, “when you interview candidates, you want to know what they do outside of work, to find out what if the person is self-motivated”. I would like to add that, first of all, self-motivated employees are intrinsically motivated, and that it is what every company needs when it comes to hiring people. This is because self-motivated employees are already intrinsically motivated, and do not just do the work they have been hired to do, but they also take the initiative and seek out new work to do in the organization.
Samantha,
Excellent insights overall, I share similar experiences with you when it comes to personality test used in pre-screening prospective employees. I’m if companies could come up with a better way of screening applicants like Brian pointed out in ‘’ "finding out if an applicant is self-motivated”.
Hi Alexis,
Great insights overall. I like the part when you interviewed a general labour candidate and you were surprised of how he answered your question, whether “he prefers variety or routine”. His answer is humorous, and it is also on point. I would have hired this applicant as well if I were to be in your role. It is not because “being humours matters when hiring for your team, but it is an excellent indicator of a person’s intelligence, confidence, and overall temperament”, as Myers outlines in his article “ Why Humour Matters When hHiring for Your Team” on forbes.com. To him, ‘’ "humour requires intelligence and self-awareness, and people like this can quickly digest a situation and simultaneously reflect on their thoughts, beliefs, and their actions are invaluable inside organizations”.
You did the right thing Alexis, and I’m glad you also mentioned he’s a good worker and exceeds your expectation.
Keep it up.
