It is an epidemic that knows no boundaries. Regardless of race, religion, culture, or socio-economic status, no one is immune. Sadly, within our own community, this is a taboo subject that many refuse to acknowledge. We imagine all drug addicts to be homeless, uneducated, and/or poor. However, things are not always as they seem. Drug addiction can happen to anyone, whether they live in an affluent neighborhood or the inner-city. As our community has witnessed, there have been a number of young men who have lost their lives due to overdoses in the recent years. Yet many families of the victims do not speak about the actual cause of death, in fear of bringing shame and embarrassment upon themselves. Unfortunately, in a number of these cases, it is all about maintaining dignity or preserving the reputation of the family. How many more tragedies will have to happen; how many more young lives will be lost due to this backwards mentality?
