Charlemagne died on January 28th, 814 AD, at the age of 71, in Aachen, Germany. His cause of death was Ppleurisy, the inflammation of tissue around the lungs. He became ill on January 1st. He took to his bed on the twenty-seco22nd. After his death, he was buried in his cathedral at Aachen. His son Louis took the throne. His empire only lasted one more generation, and laid down the grounds for the modern countries of France and Germany.
