Phase 1, phase 1 was conducted at Palmer Barracks, Guildford. The candidates were taught a variety of subjects coming under the three main topics,: Leadership, Navigation, and Instruction. Under leadership, they were taught the roles and responsibilities of a JL (administration), the duties of a JL in a platoon harbour, and Bbarracks, and the 9 principals of leadership. Under the topic navigation, they were taught how to fill out a Nav data sheet, how to correctly navigate through the bush, and compass structure. As part of theire training in instruction, they were taught the structure of the soldiers 5, and later on, were tasked to deliver them to theire fellow candidates, and they were taught the structure of SMEAC (verbal) orders, which they were then later tasked with delivering a set of SMEAC orders on phase 2.
