I live in Brazil, a resource-rich country in many aspects. The increasing production of oil and other resources have contributed to reducereducing poverty in the last decade, showing the benefits of this kind of economic growth. On the other hand, the last few years have also exposed that these effects are not sustainable, consisting of another boom and bust cycle, associated with a strong commodity dependency. How to lessen this dependence is a challenge that our government needs to face.
The discovery of new oil reserves reduced the need for imports, contributing to the pursuit of self-sufficiency and to the energy policy development. A new challenge with increasing relevance is how to turnmale this asset compatible with the sustainable goals, as the world is taking practical steps towardstoward a sustainable energy economy, including thea ban on fossil fuel car production and salesales.
