They say it is easier to learn a third language if you have already learnt a second. Following this logic, it is easier to learn a fourth language than the second and the third, right? Wait, does it mean that it is easier to learn the second language if you already speak one, your native? But you don't even remember how you did it,; it came to you naturally, thus. Thus, considering all of us speak fluently at least one language fluently, learning languages should be a very easy and enjoyable process. WhySo why is it not the case for most of us?
Maybe because for some people, languageslanguage is not their thing, they. They are better at math, physics, they are great engineersand engineering, but humanities is just not the way their brain wires?brains are wired?
Language is not something innate or something in our DNA, it. It is a social skill, that has to be learnt. We have to not only learn the language, we have to learn how to speak, how to pronounce sounds, how the letters look, how to read and how to write. Learning the first language is extremely hard, but if you are reading this article, you obviously have already gone through that process, and maybe even twice! You are very good at languages, languages is your thing, and your brain was wired this way, even before you learnt how to add up numbers!
Sounds promising, but just an extra bit of motivation doesn’t really make it easier, right? So what makes learning languages so hard? The problem is the same as with learning anything. The: the learning process. The idea of learning words from a list [word - translation] is demotivating. This is not how you learntlearned your native language! Memorising grammar structures and rules?
