“Media is just a word that has come to mean bad journalism.”, thisThis rather harsh quote from the journalist and writer Graham Greene shows his opinion of modern-day media. It also shows how many journalists see the development of journalism today. In the article “Citizen Journal-ism”Journalism, written by the journalist Chris Measures and published in his Blog Measures Consulting on May 1st, 2013, the author points out three arguments, for why we should be cautious about citizen journalism.
The author begins with the argument that non-professional journalists can
not divorce biased opinions from their writing, which leads to “making their reports unreliable, consciously or not.” (l.9). He states that professional reporters are “trained to understand both sides of a sto-ry”(lstory” (l.4f) and that they quote for both sides, either pro or contra still when “the overall tone is slanted to left or right” (l. 6f.). His argument is supported by his experience as he “studied his-toryhistory. (He) know(s) that bias is evident in anything we say, write or do” (l. 3f.). With this, his argument appears more valid. Also, he uses more common expressions, like “an axe to grind” (l.8) or “with a rod of iron” (l. 30), that makewhich makes his text easier to read.
The second argument is that citizen journalists aren’t trained to understand libel law.
