Samuel, who becomes a very important companion to Loti during his time in Turkey, is a descendant of Sephardic Jews who took shelter in the Ottoman Empire due to the execution that took place in Spain hundreds of years ago. He is multilingual whoand usually communicates with Loti in Sabir. Aziyade, the main object of Loti's affection, is a Circassian girl who was sold to an old Turkish man by a merchant. Another important character, Achmed, is a close Muslim friend of Loti. Overall, the journey to this oriental land dramatically changes Loti, who is a faithless man initially. Not only his views but also his character drastically changeschange thanks to his experiences in another land.
