Introduction
“When it comes to faith, don’t just believe, also understand.” There are many passages of scripture in the Bible that we have believed for years without a proper understanding. For instance, consider John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Out of this scripture, we have believed in the greatness of God’s love, which is true. We have also believed that God sent Jesus Christ to the Earth so that we would not perish but have everlasting life, which is also true. We have further believed that anyone can escape damnation in hell by believing in Jesus Christ, which is again true. Lastly, we have believed that everyone can believe in God because faith is simple, which is also true. However, a second look at this scripture and cross-references reveals something higher than the love of God, not perishing in hellfire, believing, etc.

It may come as a surprise to some believers, but the main purpose behind God sending his beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us goes beyond simply escaping hell, believing in God, and experiencing everlasting life in Christ. Whilst these are important aspects of our faith, they are not the main purpose. So, what is the main purpose? The answer lies in having an everlasting life.
