Between 1652 and 1658, many slaves arrived at the capeCape, and only until 28th28 March 1658, slavery was officially introduced by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as labor force under the British Rule to build a colony. These slaves, men, women and children derive from the West Coast of Africa, Guinea, Angola, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Delagoa Bay, Dahomey, Asia, Indonesia and Malaysia to do physical labor, such as building the refreshment station, farming or working on the docks. Many slaves differed from one another through culture, religion, ethnic background, morals and values, however, one thing all slaves had in common was that their personal lives were completely stripped from themselves. The following topics will be discussed in this essay; roles of what men and women did, the treatment of slaves, the naming of slaves, family life, living quarters and archaeological evidence about capeCape slaves.
